Ingredient Spotlight: Sea Buckthorn
At Celluvati, we believe that nature gets it right. Our skin care products are made with whole plant ingredients because plants, unlike humans, have had thousands of years to perfect their formulas. When science allows us to discover and reap new and potent health benefits, we’re really just catching up.
Sea buckthorn, or Hippophae rhamnoides, is one of those plants that reminds us just how much is left to explore. Bearing bright orange-red berries that grow in clusters along leaf- and thorn-covered branches, this deciduous shrub’s popularity has spiked in recent years. The berries’ dense nutrient and phytochemical constituents include antioxidants, carotenoids, vitamin E, amino acids, and, on average, 15 times more vitamin C than an orange.
The real secret behind sea buckthorn’s restorative power, however, is its high concentration of fat. That’s right—this fruit has lots of saturated and polyunsaturated fats, which contribute to its incredible ability to support cell renewal. By incorporating this organic compound into our Heal & Seal Balm and anti-aging skin and eye creams, we can deliver intense doses of omegas 3, 6, 7, and 9 to skin that craves these essential fatty acids.
In traditional medicine, sea buckthorn bark and leaves were used to treat dermatological disorders, and its oily berries were applied as a skin softener. More recently, sea buckthorn has been used to treat sunburn, radiation burns, and minor cuts and burns. Personally, we love this superfruit’s miraculous ability to accelerate healing in damaged, irritated, and aging skin.
One more fun fact about this power plant. Sea buckthorn grows wild in semi-desert sites across northwestern Mongolia and China as well as along the Atlantic coasts in Europe, surviving salt spray and earning its name. Because it grows well in challenging terrains, it’s often used in coastal conservation efforts as a barrier hedge, windbreak, or riverbank stabilizer. We're establishing banks of Sea Buckthorn on our farm. Once they start blooming, we’ll be able to use our home-grown sea buckthorn fruit oil!
